Mayfair Community Arts and Culture Theatre

The Mayfair Cinema was built in the 1930s, contributing as an art deco icon on Kaikoura’s seaside esplanade. The 2017 earthquakes caused significant damage to the masonry building rendering it unsafe and unusable; only the reinforced concrete façade could be salvaged. The Mayfair Community Arts and Culture facility is the first public project completed in the recovery from the earthquake. As such it represents a significant step in the journey to recovery for Kaikoura and its wider community.

Potius™ panels were chosen for the wall and roof structure because of their light-weight seismic mass, speed of construction on site, strength to span height walls, and the wide cinema space. 600mm deep Potius™ Box Roof panels and 190mm thick, pre-insulated walls provided the majority of the structure.
